football game in Northfield on Saturday The Orleans County Rural 127 Railroad St St Johnsbury vt Prices Effective Through Wednesday October IS 1939 There is a homely old saying that tells people not to bite off more than they can chew It applies to the present situation in Europe also to the end of the World war The powers which rpade the Versailles treaty ending tnat war proposed to hold down Conquered Germany and not let Her start any such fracas aga "(hey had Germany disarmed and forbidden to maintain a big standing army her most dangerous weapons taken away She lost her colonies also considerable port ons of hjer home territory 1 Our people may or may not believe this was a wise plan but anyway it has failed to work The allied governments have been unable tcfnforce the provisions of that tieaty They might have kept marching into Germany and destroying the war munitions which that country was accumulating but they did not consider it wise tr do sb They discovered they had bitten off more than they could chew Thus they failed to get the benefits they expected from disarmin'-dermany and they created intense bitterness there which was bound tb flare up when it got a chance I This should be a lesson to England and ranee in the present war situation They will have to take a vjery realistic view of the th ngs tfiey can and do If the best military judgment says they can in time break through the Siegfried line of German fortificat ons American sentiment will say it would be a grand act and tach some people that it pays to respect their treaties But if they simpl there is no use throwing away a million lives and then discover that they have bitten off more than they can chew If they can get a settlement on almost any basis that will stick it woul I prob pay them to make it It has to he admitted that making a set-lemert with some people is a good deal like catching the greased pig at the county fair SHOWING ALL THE LATEST STYLES LN NEW WALLPAPERS Replace
