Can only priests give homilies? ›

The homily should ordinarily be given by the priest celebrant himself. He may entrust it to a concelebrating priest or occasionally, according to circ*mstances, to the deacon, but never to a lay person.

On this fourteenth Sunday, we rejoice in the spirit of prophecy and faithful witness to Christ. Although the exercise of this mission does not bring us comfort, we must continue to exercise it. This is because the grace of God is sufficient for us and makes us strong.

Money, power, and pleasure are not bad in themselves. A person needs those to survive. When one makes them as the center of everything it becomes a threat to faith for it reduces time to pray and to believe in the power of God. It makes a person fail to recognize the source of those as needs for daily existence.

It is true that "homily" is more commonly used in Roman Catholic and Anglican circles and "sermon" in Protestant churches. But if you ask a Protestant seminarian what courses (s)he is taking, the answer will be: "and I'm taking homiletics"—which is the art and discipline of making sermons (or homilies).

In one part of the show he discussed the difference between a homily and a sermon and also said that the homily is mandatory during Sunday Mass but not during weekday Mass. A homily is based on the readings for the day, while a sermon is a topic and the priest picks scripture to fit the topic.

The homily serves as our moment of reflection, instruction, exhortation, and consolation. A good homily will use Scripture as a framework for understanding our relationship with God; for teaching us about how to grow in His grace; for encouraging us to hold fast to the faith; and for offering us comfort when we fail.

Jesus emphasises here that such is not the case with him. The work of God and the family of God came first for him. Following him means that nothing else should cut across his gospel in the principal relationships of our lives; that all our belonging in the world is belonging with him and in him.

The Homily is given by the Priest-celebrant (or another priest or deacon) at the usual time. If there is to be a collection (i.e. for a missionary), this could take place at the usual time or the missionary and volunteers could be at the doors of the church with baskets in hand as people leave the church.

And there is no Church norm prohibiting a priest or deacon from similar blessings. There are concerns regarding extraordinary ministers of Communion providing such blessings during Mass. Laymen are lawfully deputed to give some blessings during Mass, e.g., on the Feast of St. Blaise on February 3 (blessing of throats).

At the Mass, the deacon proclaims the Gospel, may be invited to preach the homily, and assists at the altar. The deacon may also baptize, witness and bless marriages, preside at the Liturgy of the Hours, and preside at funeral liturgies among many other duties.

In other words, priests can bless anything. The only case in which one inferior to a priest may bless is when the deacon blesses a candle on Holy Saturday, acting as a deputy and employing incense already blessed by the celebrant. Some blessings are reserved to the Pope, some to bishops and some to parish priests.
